Cordless tools are fantastic right up until you pull the trigger and get approximately three seconds of enthusiasm followed by absolutely nothing.
Then begins the investigation.
Did you charge the battery? Is the charger working? Is the battery dying? Did somebody borrow the good battery and return the sad one? And why does a replacement pack cost enough to make you reconsider whether cordless convenience was such a brilliant idea?
Modern lithium-ion tool batteries are remarkably capable, but they’re not indestructible. Heat, incompatible equipment, poor storage, damaged packs, and asking the wrong tool to do the wrong job can all cause problems.
The tricky part is that battery advice on the internet is full of universal “rules” that aren’t actually universal. Different manufacturers and battery systems have different charging, storage, and operating requirements.
So instead of memorizing a magical charge percentage or treating every battery like it’s 2003, let’s focus on the cordless tool mistakes that actually matter.
Mistake #1: Cooking Your Batteries in a Hot Truck or Garage
If there’s one habit worth changing, it’s treating extreme heat like it’s no big deal.
Lithium-ion batteries don’t particularly enjoy being baked.
Manufacturers routinely warn against excessive temperatures. That makes the cab of your truck a particularly lousy long-term battery cabinet.
A pleasant 90-degree afternoon outside can turn a closed vehicle into a brutally hot environment. The same goes for an unconditioned metal shed or other space that gets significantly hotter than the outdoor temperature.
If possible, store your batteries in a cool, dry place within the manufacturer’s recommended temperature range.
Your truck is transportation.
It is not a battery slow cooker.

Mistake #2: Assuming Every Charger That Fits Is Fine
This one is simple:
Use chargers that the battery manufacturer specifies as compatible with your battery pack.
Don’t assume that because something can physically be connected, adapted, modified, or persuaded into place that it should be.
DEWALT’s battery instructions specifically warn against forcing a pack into an incompatible charger, while Milwaukee’s safety documentation warns against counterfeit, aftermarket, or knockoff batteries and chargers.
The battery, charger, and tool are increasingly part of a system. Modern chargers may monitor things such as pack temperature, voltage, and charging status rather than simply dumping electricity into whatever you’ve attached.
That system is one reason sticking with a cordless platform can make sense once you’ve invested in several tools.
Mistake #3: Treating Fast Chargers Like They’re Automatically Bad
There’s a common bit of battery advice that goes something like:
Fast charging kills batteries. Always charge slowly.
That’s too simplistic.
If a manufacturer offers a compatible fast or rapid charger for your battery platform, use it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
For example, Milwaukee says its Super Chargers communicate with compatible batteries and monitor factors including cell voltage, temperature, and charge status. The company says users should not notice any difference in battery life due to the faster charging rate.
So don’t choose a random charger based solely on how quickly it promises to fill the battery.
But don’t be afraid of an approved fast charger just because someone on the internet said fast charging is universally terrible.
Compatibility and manufacturer guidance matter more than folklore.

Mistake #4: Running Lithium-Ion Packs Dead Because You Think You’re Helping Them
Older rechargeable battery technologies left behind a lot of habits that people still apply to modern lithium-ion packs.
One of them is the belief that you should routinely drain a battery completely before charging it.
You generally don’t need to deliberately run a modern lithium-ion tool battery completely flat to “train” it.
Many current cordless systems include electronic protections designed to manage battery operation. The important thing is to follow the instructions for your particular platform rather than intentionally forcing full discharge cycles based on habits left over from older rechargeable battery technologies.
And forget the arbitrary:
“Always recharge at exactly 20%.”
or:
“Never charge until you hit 30%.”
Unless the manufacturer of your particular system tells you that, there’s no reason to spend your Saturday staring anxiously at a battery gauge waiting for the Sacred Charging Percentage.
Use the tool normally. Charge according to its instructions.
You’ve got projects to finish.

Mistake #5: Making Up a Universal Storage Percentage
Here’s another popular rule:
Store every lithium-ion tool battery at 40–60%.
Sounds wonderfully precise.
Unfortunately, manufacturers don’t all give the same storage instructions.
DEWALT currently recommends fully charging its packs before extended storage longer than six months, while Milwaukee directs owners to the particular battery manual for charging and storage practices and generally recommends room-temperature storage away from moisture.
That’s why it’s better to skip the one-size-fits-all internet rules and follow the storage instructions for the battery platform you actually own.
For longer-term storage:
Check the instructions for your battery platform.
The broader advice is much easier:
Keep batteries somewhere cool and dry. Protect them from excessive heat, moisture, and physical damage. Remove them from tools for extended storage when the manufacturer recommends doing so.
And maybe don’t throw a $150 battery underneath a pile of oily rags in the darkest corner of the garage.
We can do better than that.
Mistake #6: Ignoring Heat While You’re Actually Using the Tool
Storage isn’t the only time heat matters.
Heavy loads create heat too.
If you’re leaning on a cordless saw, grinder, drill, or other tool hard enough that the tool or battery repeatedly shuts down, overheats, or struggles badly, don’t treat that as encouragement to push harder.
Stop and figure out what’s happening.

Sometimes your tool isn’t broken.
You’re just asking a Chihuahua to pull a wagon.
Mistake #8: Buying the Biggest Battery for Every Tool
If a 5Ah battery is good, a gigantic battery must be better.
Right?
Not necessarily.
What Does Ah Mean on a Tool Battery?
Ah means amp-hours.
At a simplified level, amp-hours are a measure of battery capacity. A higher Ah rating generally means more available energy capacity within a comparable battery system, which can translate into longer runtime.
But Ah by itself doesn’t tell you everything about how a battery will perform.
Cell design, electronics, voltage, tool design, battery architecture, and the demands of the application all matter.
And bigger-capacity batteries usually bring something else:
more size and weight.
A large battery can make perfect sense on a high-demand saw or grinder where runtime matters.
Put a huge pack on a drill you’re using overhead for forty-five minutes and your forearm may begin submitting formal complaints.
Choose a compatible battery that makes sense for the tool and job, rather than automatically grabbing the largest pack you can afford.

Mistake #9: Buying Suspiciously Cheap Replacement Batteries
You’ve seen them.
The manufacturer’s genuine battery costs real money.
Then an online listing appears promising seventeen billion amp-hours, compatibility with everything you’ve ever owned, a free charger, eternal happiness, and possibly immortality for $26.99.
Tempting.
But batteries aren’t where I’d gamble on mystery electronics.
Both DEWALT and Milwaukee explicitly recommend their authentic/approved battery systems, and Milwaukee specifically warns against counterfeit, aftermarket, and knockoff packs or chargers in its safety documentation.
Not every third-party battery is necessarily the same, but quality and safety can vary considerably. Know what you’re buying before trusting an unknown pack with an expensive tool—or charger.
A lithium-ion battery pack stores a considerable amount of energy.
This isn’t the place where “eh, close enough” inspires confidence.
Mistake #10: Letting Metal Dust and Shop Crud Get Everywhere
Cordless tools live dirty lives.
Sawdust. Grinding dust. Metal chips. Dirt. Grease.
Eventually some of it finds its way toward batteries and chargers.
Pay particular attention to conductive debris around charger cavities and electrical contacts. DEWALT documentation, for example, specifically warns that conductive material such as grinding dust, metal chips, steel wool, and other metallic particles should be kept away from charger cavities.
Unplug chargers before cleaning them and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your equipment.
Don’t automatically grab a can of solvent and hose down the contacts.
Manufacturer recommendations vary even among products, so consult the manual when you’re unsure. DEWALT’s current general battery-care guidance, for example, recommends using a clean, slightly damp cloth and advises against using solvents.
A five-minute cleanup is considerably cheaper than discovering your charger has been collecting conductive metal debris like it’s a hobby.
Mistake #11: Tossing Loose Batteries in With Screws, Keys, and Metal Tools
This deserves more attention than it gets.
Battery terminals shouldn’t be allowed to contact conductive metal objects during storage or transport.
Manufacturer documentation warns that loose objects such as keys, coins, nails, screws, and tools can short-circuit exposed battery terminals.
So don’t toss an unprotected battery into a bag or drawer filled with miscellaneous metal hardware.
Protect exposed terminals as appropriate for the battery and follow its transportation/storage instructions.
Your tool bag does not need an electrical experiment happening at the bottom of it.
Mistake #12: Owning One Battery and Expecting Your Project to Wait Politely
You don’t necessarily need two batteries for every cordless tool you own.
That misses one of the biggest advantages of buying into a battery platform.
If several of your tools use compatible batteries, build a battery collection around how you actually work.
Someone hanging a few shelves on Saturday doesn’t need the same battery inventory as someone running cordless saws and grinders all day.
But if one depleted battery routinely stops your projects, another compatible pack may be one of the more useful additions to your tool setup.
You can work with one while another compatible pack charges.
No staring at the charger.
No wandering into the house.
No accidentally sitting down.
Because we all know what happens once you sit down.
The project is now scheduled for next weekend.
Mistake #13: Ignoring a Battery That’s Telling You Something Is Wrong
Battery packs take abuse, but visible damage shouldn’t be shrugged off.
Stop using a pack if its manufacturer says the condition requires removal from service—particularly when you see obvious cracking, significant physical damage, leakage, abnormal swelling, or other serious damage.
DEWALT specifically says not to use batteries with visible damage or cracks and advises users not to attempt battery repair or service themselves.
That’s a boundary worth respecting.
A lithium-ion battery pack is not a good candidate for:
“I’ll open it up and see what’s going on.”
Use the manufacturer’s service, replacement, and recycling guidance instead.
Don’t Throw Dead Lithium-Ion Tool Batteries in the Trash
When a rechargeable tool battery reaches the end of its useful life, dispose of it properly.
Don’t put lithium-ion tool batteries in household trash or toss them loose into your regular curbside recycling bin. Take them to an appropriate battery-recycling or collection location instead. DEWALT’s current recycling guidance directs users toward proper battery recycling programs and notes that disposal rules can vary by location.
A battery recycler or manufacturer-supported collection/service location is the better destination.
This is also one more reason not to keep dead packs piled indefinitely on the workbench in the prestigious “I’ll deal with that someday” collection.
We all have that collection.
A Better Cordless Battery Routine
You don’t need a spreadsheet to manage your tool batteries.
Keep it simple:
- Use batteries and chargers approved as compatible with your system.
- Keep packs away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Follow your manufacturer’s instructions for charging and long-term storage.
- Don’t deliberately deep-discharge lithium-ion packs because of outdated battery advice.
- Use the right tool and battery for demanding work.
- Let equipment cool when required rather than repeatedly forcing an overheated setup.
- Keep batteries, chargers, vents, and contacts clean according to manufacturer instructions.
- Protect battery terminals from loose conductive objects.
- Inspect packs for damage.
- Have enough compatible batteries for the way you actually work.
- Properly recycle packs when they’re finished.
Nothing magical.
Mostly just don’t abuse expensive equipment, then act surprised when it objects.
Final Thoughts
Cordless tool batteries aren’t cheap, which makes killing one prematurely particularly irritating.
Fortunately, you don’t need to baby them.
You need to use them as their system was designed to be used.
Avoid excessive heat. Use compatible chargers. Stop applying ancient rechargeable-battery folklore to modern lithium-ion packs. Don’t make up universal charging and storage percentages. Match the tool and battery to the job. Keep conductive debris away from chargers and terminals. And pay attention when a battery shows signs of damage.
Most importantly, read the instructions for the battery platform you actually own.
Milwaukee, DEWALT, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi, and the rest aren’t all obligated to follow whatever Battery Rule Gary posted on a forum in 2014.
Your batteries cost too much for that.
Take reasonable care of them, use the right equipment, and they can spend their lives doing what you bought them to do:
